India is currently playing Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo on Friday, August 2.
The hosts have introduced a new face in their lineup, seamer Mohamed Shiraz, who is making his debut after selectors opted to rest Matheesha Pathirana due to a shoulder issue following the T20I series.
Shiraz recently made headlines with an impressive performance, taking six wickets for just 21 runs against Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club while representing Burgher Recreation Club in the Major Clubs Limited Overs Tournament.
Here are three fascinating facts about Mohamed Shiraz:
1. First-Class Debut in 2016-17
Shirazās journey in first-class cricket began as recently as the 2016-17 season. He debuted for the prestigious Colts Cricket Club against Moors Sports Club in Colombo. Despite picking up just one wicket in his debut match, Shirazās domestic career has been noteworthy. Colts batted first, putting up a solid 367, while Moors were bowled out for 158 and 132 in their innings.
Shirazās impact in domestic cricket has been significant, amassing 125 wickets in 49 first-class games and 80 wickets in 47 List-A matches.
2. First National Call-Up in 2019
Shiraz was first selected for the Sri Lankan Test squad in early 2019 for their tour of South Africa. Although he didnāt play in any matches, the tour was historic for Sri Lanka as they whitewashed South Africa 2-0 in the Test series under the leadership of Dimuth Karunaratne. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka lost both the ODI and T20I series under Lasith Malingaās captaincy.
3. Setback Due to COVID-19
In 2021, Shiraz missed the Sri Lanka Cricket Invitational T20 tournament due to contracting COVID-19 just before the first game, sidelining him for the entire tournament. He was also part of the Galle Gladiators squad in the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League. Shiraz has since transitioned to playing for Burgher Recreation Club from Colts Cricket Club in domestic competitions.
Shirazās debut against India marks a significant milestone in his career, and his impressive domestic performance suggests a promising future. The cricketing world will be watching closely to see how this talented seamer leverages his opportunity on the international stage.
